Tested at NASA: How Astronauts Put on Space Suits

We’ve all seen NASA’s white space suit that astronauts have been wearing since the Apollo missions. But what does an astronaut wear underneath that iconic suit’s shell? We visit NASA to learn about all the essentials of extravehicular space wear, all the way down to the emergency diapers. Check out our photos of the suit components here.

  1. Thanks for another awesome vid gents! You guys are doing some of the most interesting stuff on the Internet!

  2. Huh… I’m surprised they use cotton as the bottom layer. Cotton is not the most ideal material for moisture wicking. As cotton collects moisture it becomes heavy and will chafe the skin. This is why athletes mostly avoid cotton as bottom layer.

The temperature regulation suit over top of that might be the reason for cotton. With a synthetic poly blend material, moisture will absorb through and collect on the outside, where, in atmosphere, it will evaporate. But, since they’re in a sealed suit, maybe retaining the moisture in the fabric, as cotton will do, is preferable?

re glove fit: “A little bit of pain is just right.” Ha! That is the same philosophy as racing ski boot fit. As ski racers do not stay in their race-day boots for an extended period of time, those boots are fit for maximum effeciency; which means jam your toes and minimal lining thickness, along with maximum rigidity in the outer shell. Toes getting cold? Suck it up, champ! 😀

  3. Hello! NASA!!! Cotton doesn’t wick moisture! If you don’t want to use a synthetic, use wool. Crazy. He mentioned the system is unchanged in 40 years, time to upgrade the underwear.

  4. This is super cool! Thanks so much, this video makes me happy. I really like the design of the suit, it’s really retro (obviously).

  5. So it takes 2 people to put a suit on? There goes the plausibility factor of the book “The Martian” by Andy Weir….Or is it possible to do it by yourself? Also I no longer want to go into space…I can’t get past the Diaper wearing.

  6. For the current suit yes. That’s not to say there’s not going to be some future better one. Also I’m sure in a pinch you could do something that might not be standard procedure.
