Adam Savage’s Navy Mark IV Helmet

We’ve shared Adam’s passion for NASA spacesuits, including his Mercury era spacesuit replica that he wore at Comic-Con. The helmet for that suit was based off of B.F. Goodrich’s Navy Mark IV design, and Adam has recently come into possession of an original Mark IV helmet. Time to geek out about it!

  1. Adam’s geeky enthusiasm is so wonderfully infectious – I was grinning like a mad fool myself as I watched this! 🙂 Thanks guys for sharing this with us!

  2. It is always a joy to Adam enthusiastic about something, like ebeatty said, it’s highly infectious!

The comment that Adam made about him wearing a similar helmet on an upcoming Mythbusters episode, I can only think of one vehicle that uses a pressure suit of a similar design and that is a Lockheed U-2. That would be amazing and very entertaining to watch!

  3. Yes, obvious Adam is excited. As a collector or vintage cameras, I can attest to the joy of receiving a new item, especially when in such excellent condition and with “supplementary” documentation. Congrats.

  4. Interesting bit about the oxygen chamber! Nice helmet 🙂 How would you go about verifying that this is actually a genuine helmet? By the time I saw the documents I realized it must be legit, but let’s imagine that wasn’t there. As Adam said, that sticker is in immaculate condition.

  5. There is one other that pops to mind and possible one of the most beautiful aircraft I can think of. The SR-71 Blackbird…

    sigh…

Back in grade school I had this crush on a girl and in order not to get caught out we gave our crushes code names. Mine was Blackbird because come on, that is one sexy plane…

  6. Desire With something like that I would look at the insides, rubbers, foams, leathers. They can give a world of info about age and use.

Plus with so many parts there are also bound to be serials and model numbers on parts like the microphone and headphones you could look up. The military do love their serial numbers 😉

  7. Yeah, it’s the same suit, the U-2 “inherited” the SR-71 suit after the Blackbird retired. But that one doesn’t fly any more (a damn shame, it’s a stunning aircraft) so that’s by I thought of the U2 🙂

  8. Fantastic piece, that issuing tag is just the icing on the cake too, and makes this really awesome.

Format wise, is this the first time that there’s just been a video with just Adam? I seem to remember exclusively videos where he and either Will or Norm have a conversation, rather than a direct piece. Is this going to be more of a thing? Interesting if it is, I like both formats, but it’s nice to get a different style from time to time.

  9. There is also Adams interview with Brain Meeks from Knew Concepts about saws.

It is one of my favorite (if not my favorite) video’s on Tested, not for the subject per se, but Adams enthusiasm and interviewing style makes it very entertaining and interesting.

  10. Never considered that those helmets would be made from fibreglass, wouldn’t have thought it’d be strong enough for a pressurised suit.

The case is gorgeous. It’s inspired me to consider making something similar for the Dredd helmet I’m putting together.

  11. Loved the video, but Adam close your bathroom door. Don’t need to see the toilet seat up in a wonderful video about bad ass helmets.

  12. Was the helmet made in different sizes? Adam doesn’t seem like a very large person so I’m surprised it doesn’t fit. I don’t know what Navy pilot height restrictions were in the late 50s – early 60s but I’d be inclined to believe Adam is well within them?

  13. ^_^

Great vid…that visor quality is something else.

Lovin all the cool video content by the way guys…Tested is absolutely my second favourite website ever!!!

    Thanks guys.

  14. I feel the same way about Racing helmets. I looking for a early aero Simpson with the Marlboro Penske logos the ones with the flat back they used on the big ovals like Indy.

  15. So Idk if Adam will see this but I would love for him to build a accurate 3d maneuvering device from attack on Titan how great would that be

  16. Hello guys, I am in Tokyo at the moment and would like to share a special helmet.

    Pro tip: look closely…
