You’re right – we should elect a president based on whether he’ll host science fairs for kids in the White House. That’s clearly the most important issue.
I hear where you’re coming from. It’s certainly not the most pressing matter at hand but these children are far more important than you might realize.
I don’t disagree with you on the importance of children (I have 5), but I don’t buy into the current mindset that only if we fawn over our bright youth will they ever be able to fulfill themselves, whatever that may mean. To put it another way, can you name a single great scientific mind, a single great engineer, a single great inventor (and, in this case, you could even include Mr. Savage) who was praised to the high heavens by every grown up they ever met up to and even including the President of the United States? Heck, even Elon Musk, of whom I’m not actually the biggest fan, didn’t get coddled by the President or Prime Minister as a child, but taught himself programming. Rather, I hold that genius will out, whether it be a slave like Frederick Douglas, a patent clerk who did poorly in school like Einstein, an illiterate maiden like Joan of Arc, or a working class child music performer like Mozart (and if you don’t think he worked hard, look at his age when he died as compared to the number of compositions he completed and then sit around feeling like the laziest slob in the world) In fact, given the countless examples, it would see that adversity rather than luxury produces true greatness. Even, dare I say, hostile environments tend to create more amazing results – consider what the Gulag did for Solzhenitsyn or the incredibly oppressive environment of Elizabethan England did for Shakespeare.
Teaching young kids that science is easy, that folks will listen to you just because you are who you are, is deceptive at best and destructive at worst. Life is hard. Science even more so. Real science, at any rate. You make one mistake at NASA and people die. You make one mistake on the structural foundation of a bridge, and people die.
My opinion. Presidents didn’t used to hold science fairs in the White House, and we had some pretty amazing technological breakthroughs in this country.
All that aside, my original comment was just to highlight the vapid stupidity of ultramizer’s comment. His/her/its comment seemed far more concerned with taking whatever stick was handy to throw at Trump vs. any actual concern over science, the country in general or yadda yadda yadda. Just trying to call a spade a spade.
Can I say that this website is truly awful? For them to run so many adds and constantly push the premium membership, you would think they’d feel guilty about offering such a subpar product (but then, I remember those “monthly newsletters” that were promised with the premium membership . . . but I digress). I tried over and over again to respond to Xanadu1209’s comment, but the stupid website kept telling me there was an error. I even tried from a different browser with the exact same result. If I remove the reply feature, it posts the comment without a problem. The spam in the forum is one thing, but not being able to provide functional comment space on the stories is absurd. What century is this again? Good grief.
