4. The ice cream is freeze-dried. The restaurant I used to cook in had a big freeze-dryer and we made all sorts of fun things with ours. I would do horrible, nasty, unspeakable things for one of those.

6. Isn’t space came kinda like the pop up book compared to the novel? I never saw Space camp even as a kid as more than “Hey let’s eat some space ice cream even though NASA didn’t invent it nor have they ever used or flown it”

9. Regarding your popup book comment, yes. But let’s not forget the importance and place of that along a person’s educational timeline.

   Space Camp begins at the kids level. I went when I was in 4th grade, and at that level it’s obviously less technical and interaction-based and more of a guided exhibit punctuated with fun experiences. As an educator, you show the kids what’s awesome about space/science first. It serves as live story-telling experience to capture the imaginations of those kids who are interested in science and space, all the while allowing the kids to sort of insert themselves in that narrative via some of the less critical, but perhaps more culturally understood trappings of the space program.

   There is also the teen/adult-level Space Camp where it’s a way more technically-driven, problem solving experience. You’re not going to excite kids with the reality that most of any space/science career will be spent buried in 1,000 page technical manuals and running 100 algorithms before a button is pressed on a piece of hardware. But as kids become teens and teens become adults, they build an understanding and appreciation toward the technical aspect. As kids, you get the Whats and Whens, but as teens and adults you get the Hows and Whys.

   The Space Camp website is peppered with alumni who are now astronauts and engineers, who would claim Space Camp as being absolutely formative to their science education.

It’s time to shut down the Simon ‘experiment.’ No insult intended, but her style and POV is more of a send-up on the things that Tested values rather than being complimentary to its overall mission. If you truly value STEM/STEAM, then featuring someone whose ‘robots,’ and I use that term loosely, are nothing more than jokes, on the same site with serious discussions of scientific endeavor, is a non-match. There is certainly a place for her silliness, but it’s just not here on Tested. 2 cents given.

12. You could replace ‘Simone’ in that post with ‘Adam’ (or ‘Tory’, or ‘Kari’) and ‘Tested’ with ‘Mythbusters’ and get a very accurate facsimile of the objections the omnipresent vocal minority had with the latter show for its entire run. :p

    If you are looking for hard-science, there are probably better places than Tested… the site whose most popular videos for several years was of a dog reviewing the ipad (a classic worth rewatching by the way https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3xdcx2WUcU) and a slow-motion shot of Norm getting hit with a water-balloon… just like there were better shows for that than Mythbusters.

13. kim_a-I get what you’re saying, but it doesn’t address my concerns. (1)I am not a scientist looking for purely ‘hard-science,’ (2)I loved and love Mythbusters, AND, (3)I find the Simone content as detracting rather than adding to what Tested does. I love the eclectic mix of Tested. Your water balloon example is perfect; using a bit of humor to ACTUALLY TEST slow motion videography. By comparison, building dumb, non-functional robots with no end towards furthering an understanding of robotics is not analogous to Tested’s other fun, quirky, experiments. I am a Day 1 Tested fan and a contributor, not a come-lately fair-weather fan.

    to say, “You don’t like Simone, THEREFORE you don’t like Tested and must need to go somewhere else,” is a facile argument at best, and misses the point. 2 more cents, that 4 cents now.

14. i mean you gotta consider the audience. these are kids we’re talking about. What level of accuracy and detail do you propose that these kids will not only be able to understand but engage with? I mean if you told a child who loved animals and wanted to be a vet all the things that are not only required to get the education to be one but also all the dark and dirty and sad parts that come with the job? do you think they would even actually continue to pursue that career? You hook these kids with the simplified stuff and then add in detail later. Want accuracy and detail? That’s what high school and college are for.
