Tested’s Simone Giertz Goes to CERN!

Tested’s Simone Giertz explores CERN, home of the Large Hadron Collider and incredible particle detector experiments. We trek 80 meters underground into the cavern home of the ATLAS experiment, visit the CERN computing center, and learn how much particle collision data is being generated and processed by these experiments to help us better understand the universe.

  1. Nice Work Simone, enjoyed that and the music 🙂 Are we going to see T-shirts with “I’m a Proton” now? 😀

  2. I was there last year, but we couldn’t get into the big collider cave, if it’s operational you get fried if you go in there. 🙂 But I loved all the other experiments as well, it’s not just the LHC, many groups are performing fascinating experiments on small scale equipment as well. Anti-matter research for instance, I didn’t even realize we could make our own anti-matter before I went there.

Cool to see you went to look at the server-room as well, you should have showed the fancy windows going from black to translucent, that was pretty dramatic I remember. 🙂

  3. What did Simone say after doing the hair thing with the computer fans?

I love this, it’s accessible for people like me whose brains don’t necessarily do maths and science intuitively well.

I could happily watch more with Simone or Norm or Kishore wandering around the facility, or maybe you could do a podcast on it. Waiting for the silly vid with bubble wrap clad tested folks running into each other a la Simone and the unsuspecting physicist gentleman.

  4. Wish I could’ve gone into the actual accerator when I was there – it was off limits at the time… I loved the pure engineer-driven feel of the place. ATLAS had a great visitor’s center, but at the accelerator control in France it was very obvious that all the money went to hardware – which I appreciate:)

In the lobby outside the datacenter, they had a small display case that housed – among other stuff – the orignal NeXT http-server with the “This is a server” sticker still on it.

It was the closest thing – as an atheist – I’ve ever been to going to church 🙂
