One Week at Weta Workshop, Part 1

Adam, Norm, and Joey arrive in Wellington, New Zealand, home of Weta Workshop to begin work on our short film. Equipped with just a story outline and some pre-planning, we jump right into preparations for the film shoot that’ll happen at the end of the week. We begin with a visit to the prosthetics lab, where Adam has his arm moded for a prop, and then sit down to work out the details of the script. Plus, we see the creature suit for the very first time!

  1. Fantastic start. Next level detail!

I do hope you will drop the text at the bottom, it is distracting as it reads as closed captioning, and adds no real value IMO.

  2. This is the type of content I love the most. Long form, talented makers, so much to learn. Very cool your friends at Weta let you guys come out and play.

  3. That was amazing!

Looking forward to the next part. I wonder if Peter Lyon will have more “little thing(s) I do” to impart to Adam. ^_^

  4. This is a delightful surprise. The craft, the funny short. I always wanted to see Adam and Weta work together, this is amazing thanks guys!

  6. In England, I’ve heard ‘scumbling’ used to describe the process of shaving the top layer of asphalt off a road in preparation for re-surfacing, leaving that distinctive grooved surface that ruins your suspension.

  7. Scumbling is a painting technique. It is similar to drybrush, but the application technique is completely different. You jab the brush to the surface to apply a thin layer of paint. It can be used to blend or create a soft effect.

Your definition is quite interesting (and one of my least favorite surfaces to ride over!) but I’m inclined think the name for what they are doing is more likely tied to the art technique.

  8. Amazing, well done Tested team. I remember the first time I visited Weta Workshop I saw a ‘Good Samaritan’ prop on the wall and the first thing I thought of was Adam!

  9. It just so happens that I will be in Wellington in September and plan to take the WETA Workshop tour on the 17th. This is part of our self-guided New Zealand adventure for the whole month of September. So it’s fun to see parts of the workshop that I’m pretty sure aren’t on that tour. Thanks for sharing this.

Ha! Having watched subtitled content all my life, I can’t not keep glancing at the bottom only to find the text hasn’t changed. It’s so distracting I had to stop watching. Need to cut a piece of cardboard to cover the bottom of my display so I can continue watching this in fullscreen mode.

  11. Awesome episode, so interesting to see the details of what Weta is doing from your guys’ perspective.

I really wish the video didn’t go blurry when paused so I could see what specific products are being used.

Would it be possible to be more specific than “silicone” when discussing materials? There are a lot of silicone’s out there.

  12. “I don’t get claustrophopic” – are you sure you want to go there, Adam? Because I seem to remember a certain callow youth going “I don’t get seasick”… 😉
