Adam Savage’s One Day Builds: Vsauce Glasses Hack!

In anticipation of their upcoming Brain Candy live show tour, Adam invites Vsauce–Michael Stevens–to the cave for a special One Day Build. While the two chat about science, curiosity, and duct tape, Adam makes modifications to Michael’s glasses to hide a stage microphone inside!

  1. Just watching you use that dremel that close to lenses made me very nervous. Can you notice the weight distribution difference with the mic out?

  2. So you need to wear contacts so that you can hang your glasses on your shirt instead of wearing them? I’m confused

  3. Also I having problems with using hypertext as if i quote, etc I cannot post my comment. Hence the modification log of the above comment. I tried a methodical increase in post complexity. I shall see what works below.

Weird this all works but i cannot quote a past link without it not likng it.

Sorry for taking up comment space.

  4. Hum? I wonder if this is the reason a lot of news casters switched to the black framed glasses while on TV?

Neat Video, and seemly easy project to do.

    Thanks Tested

  5. If I had one wish for a Christmas present this year it would be to read that the Brain candy tour had been extended to include a few countries in Europe. Now that Simone is part of the tested crew one can only hope to see you guys in Sweden some day.

  6. Couple of things.

I would have put blue painter’s tape over the lens surface just for a little protection. Especially because there Michael’s only pair.

Again Adam, no safely glasses? I get that they are hard to see out of but getting something stuck in your eye is fantastically painful.

  7. Mics are totally a balance between placement and concealment. A sound designer and sound mixer want the placement for optimal sound, which depends on the application. For loud shows, you want the mic to be as close to the mouth as possible. Think shows like Rent or Jesus Christ Superstar. The bands and music in those shows are very loud so your gain structure is key. If a character wears a wig or hat or there are multiple costume changes you have to make those a consideration, like Adam said of Penn. I’ve had to hide microphones in hats, lapels, or if a character is bald just taped right to the top of their head…

  8. I reeeeeeeeeally love aluminum tape, too, though I mostly use it as a cheap but versatile reflective material in DIY lighting enclosures and on the back surfaces of any dark moldings, strips and profiles I might use to hide LED strips with.
