Adam Savage’s One Day Builds: How To Build a Box!

One of Adam’s favorite things to build are boxes to store and celebrate the objects and artifacts he collects in his workshop. Today, he walks you through how to build a simple box of your own in his distinctive style, in this case to house a pair of Apollo spacesuit glove replicas. Follow along and show us the boxes you make during in your own workshops!

  1. Past Adam! Don’t clean your lathe with a rag while it’s moving!

Also, enough with the janky random punch zooms during the video.

  2. Adam–Whole numbers and customary fractions: when I was making prop replicas of some NASA artifacts the engineers’ preference for 1/4″, 1/8″, etc., came in handy when a scale wasn’t available–by varying the size of the drawing suddenly a large number of dimensions would “click” into these conventional fractions and I’d know their correct size.

  3. FFS, comment section is so weird and broken on this site. Edited my comment and it comes up blank now. So here goes again:

I like how, because Adam so freqwuently injures his hands, it’s possible to roughly date most videos based on the presence and conditions of said injuries.

For example, we know this is post fingernail loss and pre lathe incident, placing it between March 4th and March 28th, and it looks like the fingernail fairly recently came off in this video, so I’m placing my guess at March 10th.
    Am I close?

  4. And now I’ve spelled “frequently” incorrectly but I daren’t edit it in case something catches fire lol

  5. A Savage– Is there a reason you refer to a 23ga nailer as 22ga? This has happened in multiple videos so, I’m confused. Please forgive my ignorance.

  6. Probably the same reason he calls a compass a protractor. Sitting around talking to yourself will do funny things to you.

  7. I confess, I thought a video about making a box would be boring, but it is actually very informative and helpful. “Strips of paper to improve tolerances” – brilliant – never thought of that. Very helpful tip. Kudos

  8. Nice. I’m always impressed by the level of precision Adam gets on projects like this. I don’t seem to be able to make a cut with less than about 1/8″ of tolerance when I try. Then Adam has had more practice than me!

The point about “whole numbers” is very valid too. Or at least numbers a human would think in. Sometimes I work in metric and sometimes in imperial. Sometimes in the UK at least, items, particularly those from the 1970’s and 1980’s can be in either system, or even a mixture. So if I measure some part in metric and it doesn’t appear to be a nice round number, I’ll check it in imperial. That weird number of millimetres is often just an inch and an eighth or something. Humans don’t naturally design anything using numbers that are hard to hold in your head.

As a side note almost everything in the UK now is sold in metric but if I buy a sheet of “2.4m by 1.2m” plywood right now, the chances are that what gets delivered will actually be 8ft by 4ft.
