Adam Savage’s One Day Builds: Giant Brass Nut and Bolt!

Adam expands his machining skills in today’s One Day Build by attempting to machine a giant bolt and nut out of a chunk of brass. It’s a thorough test of Adam’s abilities working with his lathe and precision machining, as the two comically large parts have to fit in the end!

  1. I just have to point out that Adam it looks like you’ve been doing a few more pushups a day. Looking solid as a rock when you first sat down describing why its good for the portfolio. Good use of time during your quarantine for sure. Based on the stupidity of the state i live in (so embarrassed to say cause i’ll always be a New Yorker from Mahopac, having been there for 32 years of my life until job forced my move to, ill just say southern most point from there in the US and im sure you’ll all know where, i just don’t like to say it), i’ll have plenty of time to indoors to still start utilizing the time for some exercise. But thanks to your videos my 7 year old and me have been having a blast trying to build things in our new home all thanks to you and the team of tested amazing videos he is so inspired (as am I). Stay safe everyone!

  2. FANTASTIC! I just loved this build. Why??? Because I have been there… not building a nut and bolt….but having a 1 one day build take far, far longer than expected, because of my mistakes; NO, because of my learning experiences. Hard learned, but never forgotten.

    Thanks again, Adam. Well done.

  3. What a fun project. Adam, I’m no machinist but it looks like the 4-jaw chuck on your dividing head has reversible jaws that would allow you to chuck on larger diameter stock. My understanding is that that’s what the steps are for, but this is not my area of expertise.

  4. Reversing the jaws can sometimes be a 20 minute project in and of itself and you don’t get as much contact area when you clamp that way. Since brass is incredibly soft you usually don’t want to torque down too hard on it so the more bite you can get, the better.

  5. 10 points for perseverance and a good result !

I did the fiddling with the shims to shield the part, until but recently saw that the way to do it is to use a longer strip bend it into a U that clamps on the jaw or that wraps all the way back on the back of the jaw. Alternatively do a Clickspring and supeglue them on the part and heat up to remove.

  6. Superglue might work on tiny watch parts, but it won’t do much when you’re putting this much stress on the joints.
