Adam Savage’s One Day Builds: Thermal Detonator Kit!
Adam makes use of his new soldering station setup in this assembly of a beautiful Star Wars Thermal Detonator replica prop kit from KR Sabers/One Replicas. Not only is it a beautiful chrome metal kit, but it’s designed to work with an intricate electronics system for lights and sound effects! Adam has a blast putting it together and problem-solving through the process!

“Don’t try to cut all the way trough on the first try”. Unless it’s EVA foam, then cut all the way through on the first try. Is the charging circuit for the Lipo built into the kid, or do you need to provide your own?
Great, but it doesn’t make the correct sound when you open it. It does appear to make the correct noise once you shake it, but it should make it right off the bat. That might be the deal breaker for me. Sound is half of the prop.
I’m surprised that there was no mention of the Thermal Detonator that Jeremy, Sean et al. made on Bits to Atoms ~3 years ago. It was perhaps my favourite episode of that show.
That looks like an insanely amazing casting job for the price point, but I’d want the switch to have more of a detent than it seems to. There’s no tactile satisfaction without a real click that’s not coming out of a speaker.
Lesson I learned from this is…. “double check the telephone number” before you dial.
I own one of Khals TDs and I’m a little disappointed this build isn’t more in depth.
