Ask Adam: Working with Other Makers

Every week, Adam takes a question from the Tested Premium Member community in the comments section below or on social media (tagged #AskAdamSavage) and answers here. This week, Adam talks about working with other makers in his shop, who may have varied skillsets.

  1. If I see a colleague with more experience than myself going down a path I find dubious, I leverage the disparity in experience to ask questions and spark a conversation about why they are doing things that way.

Often it turns out they have a really good plan that I just couldn’t see, but most of the time it ends up with us trying a third way (not theirs, not mine) that makes for a better result than either of us could have arrived at alone.

I work in a design agency, and I’d say our ability to question and critique our processes as we go is the key to our success.

  2. Hi Adam

You often comment that, you’ll probably leave this earth with unfinished projects and this led me to wonder what your plans or hopes are for you collection once you’re no longer here, I hope that’s not too morbid a question.

  3. Hi Adam,

Do you have a favorite Leatherman-style multitool? Do you have a least favorite?

    Cheers, Chris/Kernlpanik

  4. G’day Adam,

Do you only house your collection in the man cave or does it spill into your fhome? If so is it holy grail stuff?

  5. Hi Adam,

I love seeing parts of your collection in the cabinets behind you. Was there a tipping point in your collection where it suddenly expanded into a wider focus, or has it always been quite eclectic in scope. And how do you keep it all clean? do you have dust filtration in the cabinets as this is one of my most laborious chores keeping everything dust free.

    Cheers,
    Jon.

  6. Great question and great answer.
There’s a whole lot to unpack from this video about skill-sharing and communication.
    Thankyou Adam!

  7. Awesome Q & A! Now I have a new book to read!

Here’s a new question for you Adam:

In the cave, I see you working with a lot of aerosols and power tools that throw dust. Do you ever worry about getting overspray or gunk on your current projects and collection? How do you keep your shop clean and protect the projects you’re not currently working on?

  8. The main moments of growth we’ve had (as makers and content creators) have been when we worked in person, side by side with other makers/content creators. So interesting to see how others work! Thanks for your perspective ☺️
