This Old FX Shop: Silicone Maskmaking from 3D-Printed Mold

Frank experiments with a new mask-making technique by sculpting a model in virtual reality, printing its negative as a mold, and layering in pigmented silicone to intrinsicly paint it. We’re completely surprised by how it turns out!

  1. Frank, first off, great demo and so cool! I love the subtle color effect you got on the finished piece.

Would doing something like laying colored thread into the silicone work with something like this for super-fine veining or would that just get so lost as to be not worth the effort?

    Repli-Cave??? ehhhhhh? Maybe not.

  2. Great project guys! Something I really want to try one day.

Frank, have you every tried a two part 3D Printed mold? I’m curious if that would work to create a full bust or prop.

  3. I fast forwarded just to se e the end result! Amazing stuff! Like the return to longform aswell, will enjoy this over the weekend. Good to see great stuff!!

  4. I watched Frank do the sculpt a few weeks back, awesome to see the progress. Seems like the layer numbering was a little off. Layer 7 was definitely earlier, prior to 5 by the looks of it.

  5. Great video! I’m getting some ideas for my own projects.

Have you considered using something like Smooth-on’s XTC-3D to smooth the mold before brushing in the silicone?

  6. If you used this negative and create a mask with latex, could you use naphta or white spirits & brush or airbrush them over the finished mask to soften the print lines? kinda like smoothing ABS with acetone?

  7. I vote for the “3D Hole” as the shop name. Other alternatives could be “The Print Shop”, or the T.E.C.H room (Technolgy Exercising Creative Humans.

  8. My coworker Liz and I were inspired by this video to create some 3D printed molds for appliances to show off at our science center’s “After Dark” event in October. Our little maker space isn’t quite on par with Frank’s shop (or Adam’s!), but we sure have a lot of fun!! She did the digital sculpting and I supplied the silicone experience. We won’t be taking Frank’s job anytime soon, but we are learning. Thanks Frank, Norm, and the whole Tested crew!!
